WSJ seeks executive producer for its daily podcast

The Wall Street Journal and Gimlet Media are seeking an executive producer to develop, launch and oversee production of a daily podcast.

Based in New York, and reporting to the Global Head of Video and Audio at The Wall Street Journal, top candidates for this position will demonstrate excellent journalistic instincts and creative production and team-management skills. We are looking for an editorial leader with a proactive and entrepreneurial spirit who wants to help shape the creative vision of an ambitious new show.

The ideal candidate loves to tell stories, to innovate and problem-solve, and has a proven track record for developing and launching audio content. We’re looking for someone who is a great manager and wants to develop talent. This is a hands-on role based in New York.

The Show:

This new daily podcast will bring the Journal’s strongest reporting to our ambitious audience each day, sharing deep insights, context, analysis and storytelling from the Journal’s well-sourced reporters and editors in a format that is best suited for audio. We will draw from the Journal’s unparalleled business reporting and global news operation, plus Gimlet’s audio expertise, to create this new show.

Primary responsibilities of the Executive Producer include:

  • Managing a team of audio producers and a host to produce a 5-day-a-week podcast
  • Proposing new and original ideas for timely and relevant programming on a regular basis
  • Inspiring a team to work creatively under tight deadline pressure
  • Collaborating with key editors in New York, London and Hong Kong to make sure the breadth and depth of the Journal’s reporting is represented
  • Coaching beat reporters and news editors to strengthen voice-over skills
  • Researching, writing and producing coverage, as necessary
  • Providing clear and productive notes on scripts and programs in production
  • Ensuring that all journalistic and legal standards are followed at all times
  • Completing additional duties as identified and assigned

Key candidate requirements:

  • At least eight years’ experience working in a non-fiction audio environment, producing original audio content and overseeing a team
  • Deep understanding of current business and markets trends, domestic and international news, tech and politics
  • Adept with operating studio boards as well as field equipment
  • Professional-level understanding of Adobe Audition and Pro Tools software
  • Demonstrated experience producing compelling programs under tight deadline constraints
  • Clear communicator with exceptional written and collaboration skills
  • Ability to keep cool under pressure
  • All top candidates for this role will be required to provide at least three examples of non-fiction audio they’ve produced that demonstrate an innovative and fresh approach to audio and/or news programming
