WSJ seeks editor to oversee mobile initiatives

The Wall Street Journal seeks an experienced editor to lead mobile initiatives in the newsroom.

This editor should be passionate about mobile storytelling and have a strong understanding of the evolving mobile landscape.

The ideal candidate will be a creative problem solver, have previous experience managing a mobile news product, possess solid news judgment, have a clear understanding of newsroom dynamics and a high comfort level with technology and digital tools.

Responsibilities and expectations for this role include:

  • Possesses a deep understanding of mobile storytelling, technology and user behavior
  • Has an obsession with the mobile user experience and a strong focus on how to get more readers to consume and engage with WSJ’s journalism on phones and tablets
  • Is an advocate for mobile storytelling in the newsroom and an example and teacher to others
  • Manages off-platform publishing efforts, including Apple News and Facebook Instant Articles, and can help develop strategies for distributing WSJ’s journalism on new native experiences
  • Understands social and messaging apps and their potential to deliver news to new audiences
  • Ensures every aspect of WSJ.com is optimized for our growing mobile audience
  • Ensures that design, UX and technical implementation are consistent across mobile products
  • Coordinates trainings and other efforts to ensure that newsroom workflow is mobile focused
  • Helps to introduce new tools in the newsroom that enhance our storytelling on mobile devices
  • Works closely with audience engagement editors to develop new strategies formobilereaders
  • Works across departments — editorial, product, design, technology, advertising — to ensure WSJ is providing readers with the best possible mobile experience

Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
