WSJ seeks editor for business of health care

The Wall Street Journal’s Health & Science group is looking for an enterprising editor to help lead our coverage of the business of health care. You will manage a team of reporters covering hospitals, health insurance, health care costs, the intersection of medical care and technology, and the implementation of health policy.

Healthcare encompasses nearly one-fifth of our nation’s economy, and includes some of the largest publicly traded companies and nonprofit institutions in the world. They merge and acquire; they provide products and services that can mean life or death for consumers; and they bill governments, insurers and individuals trillions of dollars.

As the leader of this team, you will drive coverage that impacts every single reader, as patients, as investors and as taxpayers. You will help reporters on your team and across bureaus conceptualize, dig up and deliver best-in-class business journalism. You will drive daily coverage, and you will lead projects or major coverage story lines, talking through stories with editors and strategizing with reporters. You will work with visual, audio, video and strategy colleagues; help manage our planning; and edit copy.

Experience with the subject matter is preferred, but not required. What is required is a desire to master the ins and outs of these industries and become a thought leader in the healthcare space.

While you may start the job remotely, you will eventually be based in New York and report to Stefanie Ilgenfritz, the health & science coverage chief.

You Will:

  • Set the agenda for coverage in your area for the near, mid and long-term.
  • Help guide reporters from idea conception, through reporting strategies, to execution.
  • Edit stories with an eye toward clear, concise and illuminating coverage.
  • Lead with empathy, help your reporters produce their very best work and support your team members’ career development.

You Have:

  • 3 or more years of experience managing reporters.
  • A proven ability to break news and tell compelling narrative stories across platforms.
  • A passion for the subject matter that will drive you to be the most knowledgeable journalist on your beat.

To apply, please submit a resume and cover letter by April 1.
