California and other west coast states are home to some of the hottest economies in the nation, as well as some of the biggest economic challenges, including a lack of affordable housing and widening inequality. The reporter will find distinctive, original stories that illuminate these trends, deftly mixing knowledge of data and policies with on-the-ground reporting in communities throughout the region.
California is also home to one of the most compelling political narratives in the country. The state is aggressively charting a different course from the federal government on a host of major issues, including the environment, immigration, health care and taxes. The reporter will develop sources in and around state government to break news and write compelling enterprise stories.
As part of the Journal’s U.S. News team, the reporter will also be called on to help cover major breaking news events.
Some background in the subject matter is helpful but not necessary. The right candidate will have a passion for the subjects and a demonstrated ability to generate story ideas, break news, and translate in-depth reporting into storytelling accessible to a broad readership.
The reporter can be based in Los Angeles or San Francisco and will regularly travel throughout the West, including to Sacramento. The position reports to the Los Angeles-based West Coast Bureau Chief for US News Ben Fritz.
