WSJ seeks desktop platform editor

The Desktop Platform Editor ensures that The Wall Street Journal’s desktop audience has the best possible experience every hour of the day but with a particular focus on U.S. working hours.

He or she manages a team to carry out and gauge success of the coverage developed by the Chief News Editor and the coverage chiefs and the broad strategies developed by the Editor for Digital Content Strategy.

Tasks/Responsibilities

Content

  • Curate and manage the WSJ.com desktop home page and main landing pages based on news judgment, established priorities, audience behavior and performance. Determine lineup, priorities and play based on the journalism being produced by the coverage areas.
  • Work with Tech/Product team and Editor for Digital Content Strategy to develop new templates and layout options for the desktop homepage
  • Test and ensure error-free publication (links, etc.) of story packages generated by the coverage areas and the Spot Desk.
  • Set standards, advise and guide the coverage chiefs in the planning stages of stories about what is required from the story packages on article level to ensure that readers are offered the best possible presentation on the desktop.
  • If necessary, tailor story packages for optimized viewing on screen sizes > 12 inch, including SEO, headline style and length, graphics/photo croppings, hyperlinking, etc. Feed learnings back to Coverage Chiefs and editors
  • Track performance and quality of story packages (content, formats, structure), make real-time adjustments if required and provide feedback to the Managing Editor and Coverage Chiefs for future optimization.
  • Manage a team of desktop editors,platform engagement and customization/tailoring specialists,who handle the minute-by-minute display of all our coverage during the New York day.
  • Create and manage a 24/7 coverage strategy together with the WSJ newsrooms in London and Hong Kong; plan and manage a seamless plan to hand off responsibility for the web site between the three newsrooms.

Platform and workflows

  • Regularly review the platform strategy (content, design, UX, navigation, personalization) based on industry standards and trends, audience behavior and editorial vision in collaboration with the Product & Tech team, the senior newsroom editors, redefine with the the Digital Strategist.
  • Drive and supervise product-development strategy development implementation on the WSJ.com desktop view.
  • Define, manage and coordinate with other platforms the publication strategy (timing, scope etc.) for WSJ.com on the desktop based on audience behavior and audience data, communicate strategy to Coverage Chiefs and coach coverage areas to implement strategy.
  • Define “What does good look like” (story telling, content structure, story components, etc.) for the Desktop edition in collaboration with the Visuals Teams and Audience Insight teams, inform and coach the coverage-area journalists and editors so that they understand and take into account these best practices for the Journal’s WSJ.com desktop edition in their daily work
  • Measure, track and manage relevant mid-term key performance indicators (KPIs) for desktop audiences, share with Coverage Chiefs and coach
  • Regularly review and optimize the back-end functionality and usability of the Desktop edition, work with development and tech teams on continuous improvement
  • Regularly review the processes and workflows used to publish journalism on the Desktop edition, in conjunction with the coverage areas and newsroom leadership to optimize our efforts
  • Ensure the user-friendly integration of text and non-text formats (i.e. seamless embedding and delivery of video), in conjunction with the Product & Tech team
  • Plan with the coverage areas and implement the special visual treatment of major events, either on the standard WSJ.com site or with micro sites etc.
  • Work with the commercial team on innovative, non-intrusive and audience friendly desktop platform advertising solutions that are in line with WSJ standards
  • Work with the commercial team on the technical implementation of non-editorial and sponsored-content solutions that are in line with WSJ standards (E.g. microsites)
