WSJ seeks DC-based audio producer

The Wall Street Journal is seeking a Washington D.C.-based audio reporter and producer for its podcasting team.

The audio reporter/producer will work with text reporters and newsroom editors to produce timely audio journalism for WSJ’s portfolio of daily news and finance podcasts. This role encompasses a mix of reporting on the mic, as well as producing behind the scenes, and includes fill-in hosting for regular podcast hosts as needed. Top candidates for this position will have a professional background in audio journalism at a news organization, top-notch on-air presentation and writing skills, and have experience reporting business and politics in the studio and the field.

While the primary working hours for this position are traditional office hours, applicants need to have flexibility to cover any shift required, including availability to fill in for hosts on overnight shifts several weeks a year. This reporter’s schedule will shift as needed to support all podcasts, so flexibility is key in this role.

You will:

-Report on the mic for a portfolio of daily news, personal finance and tech podcasts

-Produce segments for daily programs, including working with text reporters and editors to bring their stories to life through audio

-Write podcast segments, including headlines and kickers

-Source timely news and archival audio

-Book internal and external interview guests and conduct interviews with reporters

-Record studio and field interviews

-Edit clips and briefs, and mix full episodes

-Propose new and original ideas for timely and relevant programming

-Manage multiple projects with tight deadlines

-Fact-check and ensure that all journalistic and legal standards are followed

-Complete additional duties as assigned

You have:

-At least five years’ experience serving as an audio reporter and/or producer in a daily news environment, preferably at a national or global news organization

-On-mic hosting experiences preferred

-Clear communication skills with exceptional written and collaboration skills

-Excellent news sense and a keen interest in current events, U.S. and world politics, business, and economics

-Demonstrated experience working on daily news podcasts in a reporting and producing role, with a track record of producing quality audio journalism under tight deadline constraints

-Ability to work early morning hours, holidays and weekends as part of regularly scheduled rotations and as breaking news and team scheduling may warrant

-Professional-level understanding of Adobe Audition and/or Pro Tools software

All interested candidates should submit a cover letter clearly outlining how their skills and experience meet or exceed the key candidate requirements, along with audio links that represent the type of work described.
