The editor commissions the reviews from outside contributors, maintains tight schedules on the delivery and publication and must be prepared to edit, copyedit or proofread multiple pieces each week. He or she works closely with design teams on the layout of the weekend section and on illustrating each review.
A wide knowledge of the book publishing industry is required, as well as a proven ability to find and develop talented writers on the widest possible range of subject. He or she must manage a department of five editors, handle payments for each piece commissioned and oversee the digital and social-media marketing of all the department’s copy.
The Books editor is additionally responsible for overseeing the WSJ’s four special Books issues (Spring Reading, Summer Reading, Fall Reading and Holiday Books) and the annual Books of the Year package and presentation.
