WSJ seeks AME for operations

The Assistant Managing Editor, Operations is responsible for a range of important functions that ensure The Wall Street Journal has an efficient, well-run newsroom that supports the creation of best-in-class journalism for our readers and viewers.

Tasks/Responsibilities

  • Lead all efforts on behalf of the newsroom for space-planning and facilities needs of our journalists. In the near-term, this includes leading the work on the rebuild of the New York City newsroom, identifying stakeholders and setting priorities, developing a space that fits our current and future needs, ensuring a smooth and timely move-in and move-out process, supporting news needs during the relocation, and communicating deadlines and critical information to all involved throughout.
  • Be the primary point of contact with our IT colleagues to ensure that our journalists have the proper equipment to do their jobs, and that the newsroom is aware of and has approved of any policy changes involving our journalists’ IT equipment and usage.
  • Work with hiring managers to ensure that our journalists are properly onboarded operationally once the journalist is hired and the AME-Talent has notified the AME-Operations of the new employee’s pending arrival. Such onboarding includes securing appropriate workspace, equipment and building access.
  • Be the primary point of contact with the HR-Global Mobility team to ensure that the MEO is kept informed of all visa changes and that our journalists receive timely, appropriate service.
  • Work with the Editor, News Production, to understand and further the newsroom’s existing contingency plans, ensuring the staff knows what to do and where to go to continue the flow of news in the case of an emergency. Assist in keeping the plans up to date and assist in modifying, as needed.
  • Work with the Editor, News Production, and the Director of Security on matters of security for our journalists around the world.
  • Lead special projects, as directed by the Managing Editor, and oversee project management for the News Department.

Key Attributes/Knowledge/Experience

  • Strong financial acumen, critical thinking and diplomatic problem-solving skills.
  • Track record of successful newsroom management; able to make tough decisions and deliver difficult news with compassion and discipline aligned with Journal culture.
  • Track record of working effectively across internal departments at Dow Jones.
  • Sound organizational abilities and inclination toward action: setting agendas, managing projects, change management.
  • Journalistic experience preferred.
  • Deep understanding of the brand, values and mission of The Wall Street Journal.
  • Skilled in conflict resolution and mediation.
  • Lead and inspire our newsroom; excellent communications skills. Knows how to delegate, brief and give constructive feedback.
  • Innovative and creative thinker, leader and manager.

Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
