WSJ seeks a weekend SEO editor

The Wall Street Journal is looking for a dynamic and experienced SEO editor with superb news judgment and a strong understanding of SEO and search data to join our Newsroom SEO team. You will play an essential part in shaping our content strategy, helping to identify content gaps and trending topics. You will also find innovative ways to improve the visibility of our award-winning journalism in search. You will offer content guidance and make headline and packaging decisions on the Journal’s platforms.

You will be a key player in the growth and development of the SEO team at The Wall Street Journal, working with bureaus across the organization. A strong command of newsroom workflows and proficiency with digital publishing tools are crucial for success.

While you may start this job remotely, you will eventually be based in our New York office and will report to the Senior SEO Editor. This is a full-time role that involves working weekends and some weekdays.

You Will:

  • Play an active role in curating and developing SEO best practices
  • Work closely with WSJ’s editorial team to drive audience growth and increased engagement through SEO.
  • Partner across multiple teams to improve WSJ’s SEO strategy, particularly focusing on weekend news and also evergreen content.
  • Work with our Technical and Newsroom SEO teams, including an SEO Analyst, to distill performance data into strategic information for the newsroom.
  • Use keyword research to work directly with editors and reporters on article and content optimization, as well as contribute to forward planning.
  • Populate and build an SEO Calendar with topics, content ideas and other strategic notes.
  • Monitor the performance of articles using real-time analytics tools and make strategic SEO decisions based on that data and real-time Google Rankings.
  • Write, update and edit content based on SEO opportunities.

You Have:

  • At least 2-4 years of experience in growing SEO organically within a newsroom environment.
  • Ability to perform keyword and trend research to identify what keywords to target and make this accessible for editorial teams.
  • Expert ability to optimize content using SEO tools such as Google Trends and other SERP tools including top stories and organic search.
  • Excellence in optimizing and editing copy for search, as well as digital headline writing.
  • Proven experience in developing and contributing to search-oriented content strategy.
  • Strong writing and editing capabilities with SEO in mind.
  • Familiarity with the Journal’s brand, content, and various digital/print platforms.
  • Enthusiasm for keeping our SEO strategy robust through the weekends.
  • In-depth knowledge and experience with Google and other search engines, as well as SEO best practices including site hygiene, URL practices, publishing processes, web crawling, AMP pages, and mobile web optimization.
  • Good working knowledge of Adobe Analytics (Omniture) and Google Search Console.
