The Wall Street Journal seeks an ambitious reporter to cover American politics.
The ideal candidate should bring energy and intensity to our coverage of the most important political stories, personalities, and issues of the day. These can include the White House and Congress, but also state governors, and a range of debates that galvanize American voters.
This reporter must be part of our strategy to tell stories in distinct and revelatory ways, using video, podcasts, graphics, and other ways to engage our audience. The ideal candidate can deliver both quick-turn analyses that contextualize big news and deeply reported pieces that give readers new revelations about the most important people and events in politics.
The successful candidate will have a demonstrated history of bringing politics to life for readers. We want applicants to have an expansive view of this beat’s potential, looking for ways to pull back the curtain on how the country’s leaders and voters are changing each other.
The position is based in the Journal’s Washington bureau.
You will:
- Break agenda-setting news on your beat.
- Conceptualize and deliver deeply reported enterprise stories.
- Work with colleagues around the country and the world in a 24-hour-a-day global newsroom.
You have:
- At least five years of reporting experience dominating a highly competitive beat and a track record of producing award-winning journalism.
- Deadline skills to report and write clearly under pressure.
- Proven ability to develop sources and write with authority on what is happening and what it means.
- A track record of tackling ambitious projects, finding original approaches to coverage and working with visuals to find creative storytelling techniques.
- A deep understanding of the ins and outs of U.S. politics and the ability to tell stories from every corner of the United States.
