WSJ seeks a personal tech reporter

The Wall Street Journal is looking for a versatile, high-energy Personal Tech news reporter for a new role that entails writing quick-turnaround news articles and hosting a weekly tech video series.

You will be joining the team as the main writer of informative, explanatory pieces based on trending tech news. The past few years have shown that readers want as much Personal Tech advice and explanation as possible, on everything from privacy concerns and password managers to Zoom classrooms and streaming video apps. You would be instrumental driving news, and will work alongside our popular Personal Tech and Family & Tech columnists.

A core component of this role is hosting a forthcoming WSJ Personal Tech channel on YouTube. In this role, you will work with WSJ video journalists to script and tape a weekly video program covering top tech stories and user-facing technology issues. The YouTube channel will consist of a mix of trending topics and longer-lead features and explainers. You’ll be the face of this channel, reading scripts and speaking to camera in a conversational tone.

We’re looking for someone who can jump from written word to on-camera conversation and back again, someone able to take complicated issues and make them easier to understand for our large and growing audience.

You will report to Wilson Rothman, bureau chief for Personal Tech, working in close partnership with the supervising producer of our YouTube team. While you will likely start the job working remotely, you will eventually be based in our NY or SF office.

You will:

  • Write daily Personal Tech news and explainers pegged to current events or our own areas of interest and expertise.
  • Work with WSJ video journalists to pitch, research and report market update videos, explainers and original series.
  • Appear on camera weekly to host a YouTube tech channel.
  • Partner with WSJ video and social teams to produce short-form video content when appropriate.
  • Have the chance to sub in occasionally to write columns, as well as features for our various special sections, including The Future of Everything.
  • Work with the Personal Tech team to conceive larger projects and themed packages.
  • Make appearances on the daily Tech News Briefing podcast and other live journalism and media across the WSJ.

You have:

  • 3+ years of professional journalism experience, preferably on the tech beat.
  • A demonstrated ability to file fast-turnaround high-quality reporting and writing on tight deadlines.
  • Some experience writing more deeply reported features.
  • An ability to explain complicated concepts plainly to a wide audience.
  • Previous digital video or television experience preferred, and are comfortable appearing and speaking on camera.

To apply, please submit your resume, a cover letter explaining how you would approach the job and 3-5 links to written work, along 2-3 links to videos, podcasts or other media. The application deadline is August 19.
