The Wall Street Journal is looking for a Los Angeles bureau chief to helm our coverage of the movie, music and gambling industries.
The editor of this group will set the Journal’s agenda on some of the most intriguing and fast-changing stories in business, from streaming’s impact on Hollywood to the spread of sports betting. The entertainment and music industries are in the throes of change, with digital distribution and new tools affecting everything from how movies and music are created to how, when and at what price they are delivered.
Coverage includes major companies, like Walt Disney and Live Nation, as well as many of their competitors and the talent, staff and go-betweens that drive the businesses.
We are looking for an accomplished editor able to lead a group of reporters and run the Journal’s coverage out of Los Angeles. The job reports to the Tech & Media Editor.
You will:
- Identify and seize storylines, guiding reporters to success and advocating for them within and beyond our organization.
- Edit stories, ensuring they are compelling and adhere to WSJ standards.
- Support, guide, encourage and inspire your team of reporters.
- Pursue various forms of storytelling including visuals, podcasts, video and other digital experiences.
- Be comfortable collaborating and coordinating with colleagues around the world, especially Tech & Media colleagues in New York and San Francisco.
- Be an essential part of our team of corporate editors world-wide responsible for delivering best-in-class business journalism.
You have:
- At least 5 years of management experience and 7 years of journalism experience.
- A track record of identifying important stories, driving coverage and delivering scoops and enterprise in multiple formats.
- An ability to coordinate and manage situations on the ground as the most senior editor in the region.
- An eagerness to learn about the industries and ability to bring both business smarts and cultural acumen to the coverage. Experience with the subject matter is welcome but not required. Enthusiasm for learning it is.
- Elite-level communication and excellent writing and editing ability.
