You will be responsible for leading a group of reporters tracking economic, political and social developments in the United Kingdom and will be an important part of the Journal’s leadership team for Europe.
The U.K. is at a seminal moment. It must reinvent its relationship with the EU, carving out a new economic and political path outside a bloc that has been its closest trading partner and geopolitical ally for more than a half a century. How Britain extricates itself from a market of 500 million consumers will be key to understanding the next chapter of globalization. Tensions stemming from the split are already spilling over to its relations with its neighbors, not least in Ireland, for which the bureau is also responsible. In turn, the exit of the U.K. has profound implications for the European Union.
The U.K. is also seeking to remake its role on the world stage, redefining its relations with Washington at a time when the Biden administration is pivoting decisively to Asia. As demonstrated by the recent U.K.-U.S.- Australian submarine deal, it aspires to having a seat at the table as the West grapples with how to respond to a more aggressive China.
You should be a skilled writer and reporter who will lead from the front, covering major stories while also guiding other correspondents. A high news metabolism and sound judgment are essential, as is experience producing in-depth enterprise work.
We are looking for a chief with a global view and the ability to coordinate and inspire coverage of the U.K. in a broad global context. If you think that is you, please let us know.
