WSJ seeks a gear and gadgets editor

The Wall Street Journal is looking for a Gear & Gadgets Editor to join the editorial team that produces Off Duty, a luxury lifestyle section that offers readers advice and solutions, on all platforms including mobile, desktop and the weekly print edition.

The Gear & Gadgets Editor is responsible for the section’s coverage of lifestyle-related technology and gadgets, as well as outdoor gear. The coverage area is broad—everything from the latest high-end headphones to electric bikes to space tourism to a cover package on tablet computers and 8 other pieces of tech that date you.

You will generate story ideas that contextualize the latest technological developments in a smart, helpful, journalistic way for readers. You plan line-ups and assign stories to staff writers or freelancers, edit all stories to assure they fit Off Duty’s service-oriented agenda and the journalistic and ethical standards of The Wall Street Journal, and usher stories through the proofing and fact-checking process. You work closely with art directors and photo editors.

You should have at least 3 years experience in both print and digital editorial, as well as a deep understanding of current tech and trends in outdoor gear, a sophisticated taste level, original packaging and conceptual instincts, a lively sense of humor, top-notch editing and writing skills and digital savvy. Experience crafting social-media strategy, SEO-friendly display, overseeing videos and conceiving interactive editorial is a plus.

You will:

  • Conceive, plan, assign and edit gear and gadgets stories.
  • Work with visual teams to coordinate art direction for stories and ensure that all art assets are on track, whether hi-res photos, original photography or illustrations.
  • Shepherd stories through production and digital production, producing additional digital-only content as necessary.
  • Report and write additional stories as needed, including cover stories.
  • Stay constantly on top of new developments on the beat to ensure coverage is cutting edge and newsy.
  • Fact-check all stories as backup to writer fact-checks.
  • Expand the section’s stable of gear and gadgets freelance writers to bring in a wider array of new voices
  • Track all metrics for stories’ digital performance to gain insights into ways to improve audience engagement, SEO, and social-media interactions.
  • Spearhead new and ambitious digital projects
  • Call in and return all related product and arrange for it to be photographed.
  • Maintain a database of publicists.

You have:

  • At least three years of experience editing and producing related content in both print and digital mediums.
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with using data and metrics to shape editorial coverage and working within a CMS.
  • Familiarity with best practices when it comes to SEO, social media and digital packaging.

You will report to Dale Hrabi, Editor of Off-Duty. While you may start remotely, the job will eventually be based in New York City.
