WSJ seeks a deputy editor of culture, training and outreach

The Deputy Editor of Culture, Training & Outreach (“the Deputy Editor”) is responsible for helping to drive and support greater understanding, inclusion and opportunity for colleagues with diverse skills, perspectives and experiences at The Wall Street Journal.

Reporting to the Editor of Culture, Training & Outreach, the Deputy Editor will spend time with news team leaders, attend coverage meetings and help to design and implement training and best practices that ensure a diverse, inclusive and welcoming workplace; will be an ambassador for the Journal’s newsroom; will work creatively and ambitiously to support the Editor of Culture, Training & Outreach in equipping journalists with the skills needed to excel in their careers and create the exceptional journalism for which The Wall Street Journal is known. The Deputy Editor will work collaboratively across news teams to carry out assigned duties, including:

  • Working across news teams to help develop programs, training and outreach solutions that enrich the newsroom’s culture of inclusion and help to bolster retention and career development.
  • Helping to manage the Journal’s robust year-round training curriculum, new-hire orientation, newsroom internship training curriculum and inclusion programs, such as The WSJ Trust Fellowship, The Wall Street Journal-Morgan State Business Journalism Exchange, WSJ & Lehman Journo-Tech and WSJ Finance Reporting Fellowship programs..
  • Overseeing production of the newsroom’s weekly Culture, Training & Outreach newsletter, including coordinating and editing content.
  • Helping to manage the Journal newsroom’s participation in journalism conferences, such as participation in training and coordination of our attending journalists.
  • Helping to identify outside training opportunities, fellowships and other programs that could enrich our journalists and our journalism.
  • Ensuring that all Journal newsroom training and outreach initiatives support goals for an inclusive and diverse newsroom. Identify ways in which our newsroom can improve in these areas through training and outreach.
  • Managing visits by outside groups and people who seek to come to the Journal newsroom.
  • Carrying out other related responsibilities as needed and assigned by the Editor of Culture, Training & Outreach.

You Have:

  • A minimum of 10+ years experience working in a newsroom; business journalism is a plus
  • Demonstrated interest in journalism training and mentoring
  • Designed, led or facilitated training for newsrooms
  • Supervisory experience

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
