WSJ seeks a data editor in DC

The Wall Street Journal is seeking a Data Editor to join its Washington, D.C. bureau. The Data Editor will be responsible for data acquisition, processing, analysis and reporting primarily for stories and visuals related to D.C. topics. The Data Editor will collaborate with editors, reporters, graphic artists, developers and other teams to promote the highest quality data-driven storytelling on all platforms.

Responsibilities:

  • Generate ideas for stories, graphics and interactive applications based on analysis of data or knowledge of upcoming data releases.
  • Provide accurate and timely data analysis to colleagues. Collaborate on assessing news value of data analysis and prioritize data-reporting tasks.
  • Write or co-write stories as needed, including explanations of methodologies used in data-driven reporting.
  • Automate data-gathering and analysis using programming languages, servers, databases and other technology.
  • Innovate on technical approaches to newsgathering and presentation, such as machine learning, document mining, advanced statistics, mapping, bots, etc.
  • Build data collections and tools that serve as resources for newsgathering and production.
  • Collaborate with graphic artists and developers on data analysis for visuals. Generate data files suitable for use in powering interactives.
  • Collaborate with product and tools teams to build new products and workflows. Evangelize their use throughout the newsrooms.
  • Train editors and reporters on data-journalism techniques.
  • Work with audience team to determine best strategies for increasing engagement through data-driven features.

Job requirements:

  • Experience in journalism with excellent judgment in news, storytelling and data analysis.
  • Experience with data journalism methods, including data gathering, processing, cleaning, analysis and presentation.
  • Technical skills appropriate for advanced data journalism, including knowledge of SQL and database management, a scripting language such as Python or Ruby, statistics languages such as R, mapping applications such as QGIS, and experience with Linux and cloud-based services.
  • Experience visualizing data and collaborating with developers of visuals.
  • Product development experience and/or mindset helpful.
  • Ability to work quickly and accurately under tight deadlines.
  • Ability to train journalists on skills that will elevate their ability to use data in storytelling.
  • Self-starter who is always learning and eager to take on new tasks.
  • Excellent communication skills.
