WSJ Europe seeks editorial page editor

The Wall Street Journal Europe is seeking a London-based editorial page editor.

Job duties:

Write editorials on European economic and political affairs that reflect the Journal editorial page’s free-market philosophy and that are tailored for the global audience of the Journal’s three print editions and website. In coordination with editors in New York and Hong Kong, the editor will select topics for editorials, develop arguments, and write persuasive opinion articles. Particular emphasis is placed on that are relevant to an audience beyond Europe.

Commission op-ed articles from outside contributors, especially those that offer readers unconventional or contrarian views in line with the editorial page’s general philosophy, on a range of political, economic and business topics.

Manage a full-time writing staff of one, as well as occasional interns, and coordinate with editors in other locations as required to bolster the Journal’s global opinion coverage.

Qualifications:

Fluency in English, with a demonstrated ability to write clean and quick opinion articles on a wide range of topics. Ability to edit on tight deadlines also is essential.

Expertise in economics journalism, with an emphasis on monetary policy, trade and regulatory issues, and business affairs. Applicant must be comfortable writing articles that reflect the Journal’s free-market economic and monetary views.

Previous experience outside Europe is strongly preferred to enhance ability to cover European issues from a global perspective. Experience with U.S. politics and economics is a must. Familiarity with Asian economics and business, and ability to write on topics related to business and economic ties between Europe and Asia, especially desired.

Proven relevant experience in journalism; extensive experience in major-market daily newspapers essential.

Bachelor’s degree required, preference given to applicants with degrees in economics or a related discipline.

A minimum of intermediate proficiency with at least one European language, particularly French or German, preferred.
