As the leader of the Editorial team, the Editor sets the tone and content of all products including the biweekly Worcester Business Journal, all of the electronic email newsletters, WBJournal.com website, and awards issues such as the Women in Business, 40 under Forty and Business Leaders of the Year.
In addition, oversee our quarterly HEALTH publication aimed at serving the region’s Health Care industry and consumers.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Plan/execute all editorial content
- Contribute to the strategic vision of the publication/brand
- Program and coordinate special projects
- Be involved in biweekly issue layout as well as layouts for special issues, including the Book of Lists, Central Mass. By the Numbers, etc.
- Manage and assign stories
- Maintain editorial quality and ethical standards
- Vet story pitches
- Organize and lead editorial staff meetings
- Oversee the nomination and selection process of various award programs.
- Report/write/take photographs as necessary
- Work with and help develop department staff through coaching, mentoring, reviewing story development
- Oversee list generation and work with researcher to improve the quality of lists and assist in developing new lists
- Oversee the verification of all facts, dates, quotes and sources
Public role
- Serve as Worcester Business Journal evangelist and public liaison within the region’s business community, which includes local media appearances
- Attend all WBJ Events participating when appropriate moderating panels, etc.
Management
- Manage expenses within specific budget guidelines
- Attend all NEBM and WBJ strategic planning meetings
- Hire and retain reporters, full time, part time and freelance within budget guidelines
- Train and develop all editorial staff members
- Hire freelance photographers when needed
- Conduct performance evaluations for all direct reports
- Approve all editorial staff time off and all editorial staff expenses
- Attend management meetings to communicate progress on publication goals
- Communicate effectively with the production department and other departments as needed
- Ensure all deadlines are met
- Participate in trade organization (Alliance of Area Business Publications) editorial activities
- Supervise the submission of content for local and national awards
- Be knowledgeable about competitive news sources within our region
Online
- Oversee the production of online content, including email newsletters and any multimedia productions
- Become an expert in our online delivery systems, including our website CMS
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills.
- Ability to juggle multiple deadlines and priorities.
- Ability to work under deadline pressure situations.
- Previous supervisory experience.—ability to lead a team of journalists
- A bonus if you have strong and dynamic public speaking skills
- Understanding of WBJ audience and the publication’s role within the business community of Central Massachusetts
- Ability to operate within a fast-paced environment
