Wired

Wired is looking for a stellar research editor to join our team in San Francisco.

The research editor fact-checks longform articles, web stories, infographics, and shorter magazine stories for accuracy. This is an excellent position in which to exercise and hone reporting and research skills.

The research editor works on a team with full-time and freelance researchers and the team reports to the deputy editor, newsroom standards. The team works with editors, writers, designers, video producers, and photo editors to ensure that all words and images are factually correct. The ideal candidate is comfortable juggling a variety of assignments, including fast-turnaround breaking news and projects that take several weeks.

The ideal candidate: someone who truly loves research and reporting and getting all the details correct. Researchers occasionally report and write for Wired. That said, this is not a staff writer position, and candidates with a passion for research are preferred.

Wired proudly tackles complex issues about science, culture, and technology. The research team periodically works late hours on some nights and weekends when big news breaks or if the editorial team must meet key production deadlines. Vacation time may be restricted during major deadlines.

This is a great opportunity for someone who has been a fact-checker, or has some newsroom reporting experience or a similar role.

The ideal candidate will:
• possess natural curiosity about the world
• have excellent skills as a researcher, willing to dig deep, pick up the phone, cultivate sources
• have two years experience fact-checking or reporting
• be familiar with and enthusiastic about the content of Wired
• possess a ridiculously acute attention to detail—we consider nitpickiness an asset, not a liability
• have impressive diplomatic and problem-solving skills
• have a solid understanding of journalism practices and ethics
• play well with others
• excel at juggling multiple tasks simultaneously.

A plus, but not required:
• experience tackling stories about science, politics, business, and/or tech.
• experience helping a team coordinate or manage tasks

To apply: Send a cover letter, résumé, and links to three stories you helped research or report to jobs@wired.com. In your cover letter, please describe a difficult reporting or fact-checking problem you’ve encountered in your professional life and how you solved it.
