Responsible for reading copy to find and correct errors in grammar, spelling, syntax, facts and clarity. Will design pages and story layouts using photographs, graphics and type fonts. Primary pages include the front page, local news and wire pages, feature section fronts and various niche publications. Must possess online skills, including posting stories, photos and videos to our website. Will read and edit reporter stories and AP news copy to correct errors in grammar, spelling, syntax and facts and improve clarity. Works under general supervision and refers unusual problems and situations to supervisor. Must possess excellent communication and troubleshooting skills, be a team player and work with a collaborative spirit.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Reads reporters’ stories, wire copy and community news releases for errors in grammar, spelling, syntax, names, facts and clarity, and makes corrections.
2. Rewrites copy to conform to the paper’s style.
3. Designs pages and components of pages. Must be able to meet deadline demands.
4. Checks copy for items that could appear libelous and makes corrections.
5. Writes headlines that summarize the story in a few words.
6. Selects articles for pages, designs and then paginates those pages using InDesign (or any other pagination system)
7. Proofreads pages before and after they are printed.
8. Checks directories of news stories and forwards to appropriate area for later use.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
1. Bachelor’s degree, preferably in English, journalism, or related programs, is required.
2. Must have working knowledge of InDesign.
3. A knowledge/training in graphic arts is preferable.
4. Must be well versed in Associated Press style.
