WFSU-TV/The Florida Channel seeks a news assignments manager & lead producer

  • Serves as Lead Producer for Capitol Update/News Brief. Duties include but are not limited to: Assisting in researching and assigning stories, overseeing rundowns, and reviewing information for content and accuracy. Coordinates with other departments in the timely delivery of TFC programs. Demonstrates good organization and communication skills to carry out assignments with limited supervision. Able to think creatively and work in a team environment. Able to make independent, sound news decisions during live productions to include, exclude or modify information presented. Able to accurately time shows and respond quickly to issues that may arise in live production. Able to monitor daily progress of each team member to keep production on deadline and offer assistance as needed. Works with Executive Director and Producers (as needed) to establish and implement best practices related to Rundown Approval Process and Script Approval Guidelines in order to assure agreement on format, content, structure and flow of programming.
  • Serves as Assignments Manager. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: conducts regular assignment/program meetings for CU and NB in accordance with established practices; monitors relevant news sources daily according to established needs and best practices; demonstrates good organization and communication skills to delegate and carry out assignments with limited supervision; Serves as backup to News Manager.
  • Communicates frequently and proactively with Executive Director, News Manager and other Team Members about event coverage, program content and related issues/concerns. Adheres to related timelines in order to assure all standards, needs and deadlines are met.
  • Serves as a Senior Reporter for Capitol Update/News Brief, Producer/Reporter for Florida Crossroads and other TFC Programming. Duties include but are not limited to: Being proactive in originating, researching, developing, and following through with ideas; writing clear and concise scripts on deadline; interviewing individuals (for on-air or background use) in a professional, independent manner; performing live shots, set shots, and standups; compiling information for graphics or other visual elements used to creatively and effectively complete a program or program segment. Ability to utilize social media and other news gathering techniques to focus on initial development and ongoing contact with lawmakers, staff, policymakers and other key sources critical to newsgathering. Required to follow established guidelines and policy while striving to maintain TFC’s integrity and reputation. Travel is required and the ability to work a flexible schedule, as needed. Adheres to related timelines in order to assure all standards, needs and deadlines are met. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Communications or a related area; minimum one year’s work experience in a broadcast environment preferred.
  • Experience leading or supervising a team.
  • The ability to prioritize, organize and perform multiple work assignments simultaneously.
  • Knowledge of journalism ethics, rules and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the standards, principles, trends and practices of television production.
  • Experience gathering, interpreting, reporting and/or editing information.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, time management and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of current media technology and trends.
  • The ability to work independently and meet project deadlines.
  • A valid Florida or Georgia driver license or the ability to obtain license upon hire.
