Westside Current seeks a crime/politics reporter

The Westside Current is seeking a passionate and skilled Writer/Reporter to join our team. The ideal candidate will be a dedicated journalist with a strong commitment to journalistic integrity and a deep understanding of the Westside community. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the growth and impact of a forward-thinking independent media outlet.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. News Gathering: Research, investigate, and report on current events, issues, and stories relevant to the Westside community.
  2. Feature Writing: Craft engaging and well-researched feature articles that highlight the unique aspects of Venice and the Westside.
  3. Interviews: Conduct interviews with local residents, community leaders, and experts to gather diverse perspectives on important topics.
  4. Community Engagement: Attend community events and meetings to stay connected with the pulse of the Westside and identify emerging stories.
  5. Photography/Videography: Capture compelling visual content to accompany written articles when necessary.
  6. Collaboration: Collaborate with the editorial team to brainstorm story ideas, coordinate coverage, and maintain editorial standards.
  7. Research: Fact-check information and ensure the accuracy of all published content.
  8. Deadlines: Meet strict deadlines to ensure timely publication of news and feature articles.
  9. Audience Engagement: Engage with readers and respond to comments and feedback on published content.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communication, or a related field preferred.
  • Proven experience in journalism, reporting, or writing for a reputable publication.
  • Strong research and interviewing skills.
  • Exceptional writing and storytelling abilities.
  • Familiarity with the Westside community and its unique characteristics.
  • Proficiency in photography and/or videography is a plus.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • A passion for community journalism and a dedication to ethical reporting.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to adapt to changing news priorities and work in a fast-paced environment.
