Consumers are bombarded by gadgets, online services, apps, and conflicting advice about how to use technology to manage their finances, excel at work, educate their kids, care for elderly parents, and figure out how to have fun – at the same time as they seek to safeguard their privacy and security online.
This reporter, who will be based in our San Francisco office, will focus on producing how-to guides, advice and explanatory stories that address these issues. At times, this person may write in response to the news, helping readers navigate a hack of a popular site, for instance. Writing a review of a popular consumer product also may be part of the job – but putting the user, not the gadget, at the center of a story will be essential.
The ideal candidate must be quick and creative, with strong, conversational writing skills, a sensibility for when to use humor, and some experience with video.
This reporter will be part of a significant expansion of our technology team, which will include the hiring of reporters, editors and video journalists in San Francisco, Seattle and our Washington newsroom.
