Washington Post seeks an Apple reporter

The Washington Post is seeking a creative, ambitious and resourceful reporter to cover consumer technology giant Apple and Big Tech’s growing influence on American society.

Apple is one of the world’s most valuable companies, having sold iPhones, AirPods and Apple Watches to billions around the globe. Its app store is the gateway to new online services, and its privacy policies govern the ability of advertisers and law enforcement to track our interests and movements. This makes Apple a powerful player in shaping our technology-driven future and an ideal launching point for telling broader stories about Silicon Valley’s expanding role in American politics, global economies and the treatment of workers, as well as how we live our lives online.

The company’s struggles also are compelling: Even as Apple has become ubiquitous in society, its creative footing has slipped in the post-Steve Jobs era. The company has turned to services like its TV streaming platform as consumers have found its iPhone upgrades less necessary. Meanwhile, it has amped up its lobbying shop in Washington as it has come under fire for manufacturing practices that befoul the environment and exploit forced labor.

The ideal candidate is an aggressive reporter, a nimble writer and a big thinker capable of locking onto targets of consequence and weaving compelling tales that drive the conversation. We want someone with a track record of developing sources, breaking news and producing exclusive, insightful coverage. A collaborative spirit is essential: This reporter will work closely with colleagues across the newsroom, including those covering technology, labor, the environment, and policymakers in Washington and abroad. We also want someone eager to experiment with alternative story forms, and to enhance their reporting through text, graphics and other visuals.

This position is based in San Francisco.
