Washington Post seeks a reporter to cover Amazon

The Washington Post is seeking an ambitious and resourceful reporter to cover Amazon, the ecommerce giant that is reshaping huge swaths of American life along with the consumer experience.

Amazon is now America’s second-largest private employer. Its core business has upended retail, drawing scrutiny from antitrust regulators, and has redefined the American workforce, drawing concern from workers who complain of conditions on the warehouse floor. But Amazon is more than online shopping. Amazon Web Services helps power the Internet — as well as hosting sensitive government data — while Alexa manages smart homes and Ring security cameras scan the streets. The company is a major player in online streaming and video games, owns Whole Foods and is rolling out more brick-and-mortar stores under its own brand. Through it all, Amazon is capturing an unfathomable amount of data about virtually every aspect of its customers’ lives.

We’re looking for a reporter who is eager to take the full measure of this economic and cultural behemoth, producing journalism that reveals the agendas of top executives and scrutinizes the company’s power over customers, sellers, rivals and workers. This reporter also will have responsibility for covering Amazon’s Seattle neighbor, Microsoft, which has become a tech conglomerate stretching from cloud computing to gaming. The ideal candidate will have a track record of developing sources, breaking news and producing exclusive, insightful coverage. We are looking for someone who can lock onto targets of consequence and weave compelling tales through text, graphics, visuals and alternative story forms. A collaborative spirit is essential: This reporter will work closely with colleagues across the newsroom, including those covering technology, labor and Washington policymakers.

Once we resume normal operations, the position will be based in Seattle or one of our newsrooms in San Francisco or Washington, D.C.
