The reporter will focus on the Fed, one of the most powerful institutions in the world, as it goes through a challenging period. The central bank is facing a slowing economy, but its toolkit remains depleted by the last downturn. And it is frequently under attack by the White House, forcing central bankers to weather extreme political pressure as they make decisions with the economy hanging in the balance.
Covering the Fed requires a deep understanding of the economy and the Fed’s tools for overseeing it, including interest rates and other elements of monetary policy. It will also require thorough reporting about the institution’s leaders and how President Trump tries to influence them.
This reporter will also take a lead role in covering the domestic economy, which is sending mixed signals about whether it is tottering toward recession or settling in for low but steady growth. Working with others on the Business desk, this reporter will cover news and produce enterprise about the forces shaping businesses, consumers and the labor market.
The best candidates will have a track record of producing authoritative and accessible stories about economics. Experience with accountability journalism or breaking news out of secretive institutions would be a plus.
This position is based in our Washington newsroom and is not eligible for remote work.
Interested candidates should send a cover letter, a resume and three clips in PDF format to David Cho (David.Cho@washpost.com), Zachary Goldfarb (Zachary.Goldfarb@washpost.com), Damian Paletta (Damian.Paletta@washpost.com) or Tracy Grant (Tracy.Grant@washpost.com) by Dec. 18.
