Washington Globe seeks reporter

The Globe is looking to add to our dynamic news team and provide a supportive place where a reporter can grow their skills across multiple platforms. This multimedia journalist will create content from breaking news to business reporting, county beat coverage and occasionally sports for digital and print.  Our reporters are responsible for producing engaging, relevant stories and/or visuals in a variety of formats on our publishing platforms, with an emphasis on digital content and publishing.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Research and report on assigned topics and issues.
  • Produce news for publication, including video, photography, graphics, social media, podcast and print journalism.
  • Produce accurate copy on deadline, be a stickler for details.
  • Maintain communication with editors.
  • Strong content-gathering, production and organizational skills.
  • Positive attitude with strong communication skills.
  • Flexibility in taking on assignments and with work hours.
  • Respond with urgency to breaking news, including writing stories and producing visuals on deadline with a digital audience in mind.
  • Drive audience loyalty and digital growth through engaging and timely content.
  • Embrace a creative, collaborative approach among team members and FCC departments.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Writing experience for a newspaper, website, magazine or specialty publication is required.
  • Experience using digital analytics and social media tools is preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of video and photo editing is preferred.
  • Some experience in proofreading or editing is preferred; AP Style knowledge is a plus.
  • Journalism or communications degree is helpful, though equivalent experience will be considered.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITY:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • A strong sense of purpose and urgency for the news.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, as well as independently, and prioritize tasks.
  • Must be able to multitask and juggle many different projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work quickly and accurately using a Web-based content management system.
  • Must be creative, organized, hardworking and a self-starter.
