Wall Street JournalThe Wall Street Journal is seeking a talented and creative video director to help shape and define the future of video in its lively and evolving newsroom. This is a senior leadership role and a unique opportunity to help build a mobile first video strategy and oversee all video coverage globally, including news video, features, series and documentary-style content.

The Wall Street Journal has a unique position as America’s most trusted newspaper, with millions of subscribers and video is a core growth area, this is a unique opportunity to be in at the start to build the future of video at the Wall Street Journal.

In this leadership position, the director will be in charge of creating world-class storytelling through video journalism. Working closely with video team and editors from across the organization and using data insights to evaluate impact, you will help shape the editorial strategy and the look and feel of content across all areas of coverage.

The director will lead a team to create compelling video to increase the engagement of newsroom stories, as well as spearhead original programming and series for WSJ platforms, OTT and other third-party platforms, including social media.

We’re looking for candidates who have a passion for following evolving trends in digital media, monitoring new emerging platforms, a strong sense of what WSJ customers are looking to watch and continually looking to improve and innovate for the customer.

The role requires a strong sense of experimentation and an ability to thrive under pressure, working effectively under intense deadlines in breaking news situations as well as managing longer term projects.

This is a New York based position and will report to the global head of video & audio.


  • 5+ years experience setting and managing the execution of video content strategy
  • Proven track record as a creative storyteller who can envision and direct the creation of captivating digital video with strong editorial judgment
  • Experience in creating longer form content, particularly documentary style for a digital market is a plus
  • Network of talent
  • Strong editorial judgement, to keep in line with WSJ editorial coverage
  • The desire and passion to create fresh content, try new things and experiment with new story formats
  • Experience in understanding user data and analytics to help track performance and highlight opportunities
  • Strong leadership skills with an ability to motivate and manage a staff, and the ability to attract and develop top talent and to collaborate with other WSJ coverage leaders
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule that may occasionally include nights and weekends
  • A commitment to WSJ’s mobile first strategy, standards and mission, and a deep knowledge of video industry
  • Experience of building a team is a bonus
