VTDigger seeks a senior editor

VTDigger is looking for a senior editor with experience in coaching, mentoring and inspiring reporters.

Your primary responsibility will be to lead a group of four to five reporters from pitch to publication. You’ll work with them to develop sources, hone story ideas, solve reporting problems and write excellent stories. You will be responsible for first reads, rewrites, identifying omissions and ensuring fairness and accuracy.

As a key member of the newsroom leadership team, you’ll work with other top editors to deliver on VTDigger’s mission of producing rigorous journalism that explains complex issues, promotes public accountability and fosters democratic and civic engagement. This collaborative group meets daily to determine coverage priorities, sort through story ideas and address newsroom challenges.

As a digital news organization, VTDigger is always looking for new ways to deliver our reporting to our existing audience — and, just as importantly, to those we’re not yet reaching. We want to hear from those with interest and experience in innovative journalism techniques.

Senior editors must be nimble and willing to work with reporters on a variety of beats, but we’re particularly interested at the moment in candidates who are passionate about state government, politics and policy. Knowledge of Vermont state government is a plus, but certainly not a prerequisite. If there are particular policy realms that move you, let us know.

In recent years, VTDigger has engaged in an intensive effort to become a more diverse, equitable and inclusive organization. We seek to include the voices of all Vermonters — particularly those from underrepresented and historically marginalized communities — in our coverage and in our newsroom. As a senior editor, you’ll play a leading role in ensuring that we deliver on those goals. We want to know how you’ll do this.

Supervisor: Managing editor Maggie Cassidy

Location: Vermont. Our headquarters is in Montpelier, but we’re open to editors living anywhere in the state.

Start date: June 2023

Compensation: $70,000.

The deadline to apply is Thursday, May 18, 2023, at noon
