VTDigger is seeking an editor with proven experience to anchor its night desk. This person will work with a team of editors and reporters to publish thorough, accurate, accessible, well-written copy with a top-notch visual presentation.
We expect excellent editing chops, organizational and communication skills, and attention to detail. You will be responsible for final reads, minor rewrites, fact-checking, identifying errors and omissions, conforming to VTDigger’s style and working with reporters to ensure the fairness and accuracy of stories. Given VTDigger’s commitment to better serving the communities we cover, we’ll expect you to edit with an equity and inclusion lens.
You will be responsible for the presentation of stories on VTDigger’s website and you’ll have a variety of responsibilities related to social media, newsletters, graphics, commentaries and obituaries. You’ll report to the deputy managing editor and collaborate with all of VTDigger’s editors to ensure that standards and deadlines are met — and to improve our work processes and organizational culture.
This position requires afternoon and evening work.
Location: We are based in Montpelier, Vermont, but we’re open to the night editor living elsewhere — so long as they understand this region or are committed to learning about it. Given the late hours required, we have had success with the person in this position living in another time zone.
Start date: July 2023
Compensation: $55,000-$60,000. VTDigger offers a highly competitive benefits package, which includes five weeks of paid time off to be used for sickness or vacation and eight weeks of nearly fully paid parental leave.
Supervisor: Deputy managing editor Alicia Freese
How to apply: Using this form, please upload a resume and a cover letter addressing why you want to work for VTDigger and why you’re the right fit for this job. The deadline to apply is Wednesday, June 14, 2023, at noon.
