- At least four years of experience in reported policy journalism, including at least two years of full-time economics coverage
- Wide knowledge of economic topics, including the latest academic literature in key areas, the government statistics that underpin policy debates, and the machinations of policymaking in the federal government and the Federal Reserve
- A proven ability to see connections between how economic policy changes affect Americans in their daily lives
- A familiarity with earnings statements and other corporate disclosures, and an ability to use them to illustrate broader trends in economic policy
- An entrepreneurial spirit
