Virginian-Pilot seeks business reporter

The Virginian-Pilot is looking for an experienced, versatile reporter to join our business team.

We need someone who can juggle several beats, producing breaking news and enterprise. Hampton Roads is home to three Fortune 500 companies, and has an economy that relies heavily on defense, tourism and shipping.

A proven track record of handling online/digital reporting is a must. The Pilot, the largest paper in Virginia, has a long history of strong business coverage.

Essential Functions:

  • Writes compellingly, precisely and accurately
  • Meets deadlines
  • Produces a regular mix of stories, including breaking news and features.
  • Contributes to convergence strategy with online and broadcast ideas.
  • Collaborates with reporters and editors throughout the newspaper on stories and story brainstorming.
  • Travels for news coverage as required.
  • Writes in-depth explanatory and investigative articles involving computer-assisted reporting, document searches and Freedom of Information requests.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Track record of urgency in reporting and writing.
  • Proven record of beat development. This reporter will need a wide range of sources in order to pounce on and bring depth to important stories.
  • Precision and clarity in writing, with ability to present complicated information in a way that engages readers.
  • Proven ability to work well in a team setting. This reporter will deal on a regular basis with a large number of people, both in-house and from the outside.
  • Ability to locate and use data to inform stories.
  • Track record of uncompromising accuracy
