Virginian-Pilot seeks assistant business digital producer/editor

The Virginian-Pilot newspaper is seeking an assistant business digital producer/editor.

This person will shape and be the producer of all things digital for Inside Business and Virginian-Pilot business, as well as a copy editor and backup editor for the Inside Business print product.

Essential Functions: This employee will be a digital producer/assistant editor for the Inside Business and Virginian-Pilot business teams. We are looking for someone with strong knowledge and skills in social media, who has a keen eye for social trends and who also can present buzzy news that will engage our audience.

He or she will also copy edit and serve as a backup editor for our weekly business journal.

This person will compile business e-newsletters and other content. The digital producer/assistant editor also must communicate with our business editors and the digital team to brainstorm, plan and execute content. This includes keeping the websites fresh with engaging videos, photos and other related material such as interactives and graphics.

We want to continue to be a premier destination for our business community in a competitive market, so we are looking for a clean and engaging writer and editor who is comfortable creating crafty headlines as well as curating interesting content that our audience is driven to. A strong component of this job includes the ability to routinely analyze metrics, use them to identify patterns and develop action items for exploiting them.

Your work will be published on Pilotonline.com/business, on InsideBiz.com and in Inside Business and The Virginian-Pilot. Inside Business is a weekly print newspaper distributed to business-focused readers throughout South Hampton Roads. The Virginian-Pilot is a Virginia’s largest print daily newspaper and distributed in the same region.

Accountability: Goals will be set each year for an annual performance review.

Expected Behaviors: Communicative, team player

Measurable Results: Key measures will be website metrics and increasing digital traffic.

Authority: This person will shape how the Inside Business and Pilot business digital content will look. This person reports to the Inside Business editor for two-thirds of the work (for all things Inside Business digital and copy editing for print) and the Pilot Business editor (for all things Pilot business digital).

Key Relationships: Inside Business editor, Pilot Business editor, Pilot digital news editor

Basic Qualifications: -Bachelor’s degree.

  • A minimum of two years experience in journalism, with preference to those with a business and a digitally focused news background.
  • Ability to analyze metrics, use them to identify patterns and develop action items for exploiting them.
  • Skills in use of content management systems, social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Periscope), publishing tools, such as Dreamweaver, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Microsoft Office programs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Self-motivated and can work independently when necessary.
  • Experience covering business news
  • In-depth, detailed knowledge of business issues and news.
  • Strong news judgment and copy-editing skills.
  • A great communicator who has proven ability to work well with other team members across the company.
