Variety is looking to hire an aggressive, pro-active news reporter to cover the film beat.
The ideal candidate, to be based at Variety’s L.A. headquarters, will be expected, first and foremost, to break significant, high-impact news stories on our website. Opportunities also exist for writing more in-depth, analytical pieces for our weekly magazine, but the top priority is breaking daily stories online.
The reporter will be responsible for closely tracking the goings-on at the major film studios, production companies and talent agencies, getting out in front of our competitors in these areas with must-read coverage. The range of expected stories include covering all significant management changes at the top of companies; major business transactions and strategies; helping on M&A stories; profiles of leaders and industry influencers, as well as identifying and contextualizing business trends and market disruptions.
The candidate must be a highly-motivated self-starter, possess excellent reporting and writing skills and have deep relationships and sources throughout the industry—with studio chiefs, executives, agents, managers, lawyers, talent, media analysts and other business leaders. This person must also be energetic and have at least five years of experience covering the film beat in an assertive manner. The candidate will be asked to provide multiple examples of his or her biggest breaking stories and compelling features that have led the conversation in media circles.
