Purpose:

The Managing Editor supervises and directs the Utah Business editorial staff to ensure maximum production, quality control, and efficiency of assigned magazines and additional projects. Oversees group administration and operations, including 12 monthly publications, 4 Silicon Slopes issues, 3-4 custom publications, and 13+ award programs each year.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and adhere to an annual editorial calendar
  • Plan monthly content
  • Manage internal teams of editors and art department, as well as freelancers
  • Coordinate with guest column contributors
  • Work with external clients to plan, develop and deliver content
  • Edit columns and articles
  • Manage award programs- launch and compile nominations, assemble judging panel, select honorees, schedule interviews, photoshoots, etc.
  • Oversee Book of Lists research and list editing
  • Manage Monthly roundtables- schedule, invite attendees, and attend

Competencies:

  • At least 5 years of successful journalism experience required, either at a consumer magazine, trade magazine, B2B publication, newspaper or online publication
  • Excellent editorial skills – writing, editing, creative concepting
  • Excellent oral and presentation related communication skills
  • Must be organized, efficient, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple projects and tasks with aggressive deadlines and have strong time-management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate, instruct, coach, direct and supervise others in performing their essential job functions

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
