USA Today seeks deputy money editor

USA TODAY seeks a Deputy Money Editor to work in a fast-paced, 24/7 news environment.

This person will demonstrate strong news judgment and successful work in a breaking-news environment, as well as the ability to research and update breaking news stories, as well as blend breaking news with enterprise and feature content.

The Deputy Money Editor should have strong knowledge, understanding and awareness of financial and economic news. This editor is also an accomplished wordsmith, capable of elevating prose as well as guiding content from entry- and advanced-level journalists across digital and print platforms.

In this role you will:

  • Create and implement strategies to deepen engagement by designing and executing a plan around enterprise/quick-twitch/original content that will shape the daily conversation and extend USA TODAY’S reach.
  • Write high-impact stories-including breaking news, features and enterprise-that take the audience behind the scenes to provide access and insight.
  • Work closely with other reporters and editors (and other Gannett properties) to develop stories, sources.
  • Use metrics and analytical tools to assess user traffic.
  • Meet stringent editing and vetting requirements and deadlines.
  • Be familiar with and committed to 24X7 digital storytelling approaches that encourage audience engagement.
  • Be able to react to change productively and handle other tasks assigned.

Here’s what you need:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of five years editing experience, preferably managing national coverage in a digital environment.
  • Must be able to work accurately and quickly in making news decisions.
  • Requires an appreciation and understanding of audience metrics, including traffic, as well as audience interaction.
  • Aggressive mobile & desktop programming skills.
  • Excellent news judgement, writing and headline-writing skills.
  • Demonstrate strong understanding of audience metrics and engagement tactics.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, both internally and externally.
  • Proficiency in Word, PowerPoint, CCI and Excel.
  • Photoshop and design skills, video production, editing skills are a bonus.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines.
