Posted by Chris Roush

The San Diego Union-Tribune is looking for a full-time biotech reporter to join our business team.

An ideal candidate would have a deep understanding of biotech who is quick to break news for online, mobile and print platforms. This person should be able to write quickly, clearly and accurately on deadline, pull together broader stories on biotech discoveries and trends, and work collaboratively with other editors and reporters to develop larger enterprise stories.

We are a web-first team that uses social media, videos and podcasts to tell stories. But we also are one of the few daily metropolitan newspapers with a standalone print business section that runs seven days a week.

Responsibilities include:

  • Providing breaking news reports and impactful enterprise stories for print and digital platforms
  • Building a network of sources and relationships with key players in the county’s biotech industry
  • Developing a deep knowledge of the people, companies, research and trends in biotech

Requirements/qualifications include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism
  • At least five years of writing experience, preferably covering biotechs or related field (Experience covering biotech is a plus, but not a must. Will consider reporters with strong business reporting/writing skills and high interest in biotech.)
  • Solid grasp of proper grammar, spelling, punctuation and AP style
  • Demonstrated ability to connect on social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram
