Triangle Business Journal seeks managing editor

The Triangle Business Journal seeks an experienced managing editor to oversee and lead coverage at the premier source for business news in one of the fastest-growing markets in the nation — the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill metro area.

At the TBJ, the managing editor is charged with providing inspiration and constant guidance to the content team. The managing editor oversees and directs the deployment of reporting resources across multiple platforms, including online, email, print and social.

Key duties of the position:

In addition to possessing a gift for organization that always seeks efficient use of newsroom resources, the managing editor must:

  • Have a thorough understanding of business and financial concepts
  • Serve as a reliable mentor and hands-on coach of reporters, consistently steering them toward beat-driven breaking news and exclusives. Also, work with the reporters, photographer and the designer on a daily basis to craft the print edition’s weekly centerpiece package.
  • Possess the ability to make snap judgments about the proper treatment of stories, while also adding context, perspective and voice
  • Work with the digital producer to come up with a cohesive daily plan of covering the most-important news of the day. Also, contribute to TBJ’s Morning Edition by aggregating at least two items per day.
  • Conceive strategies that help increase audience-engagement such as page views, unique users, social media followings, email newsletter circulation growth, event attendance and more
  • Be fearless about operating in one of the most competitive and energetic business news markets in the nation
  • Work with the editor to come up with speakers, moderators, judges and emcees for all the TBJ events during the year.

Knowledge & Skill Requirements:

Candidates should have strong news judgment, solid organization skills in addition to a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. Additionally, applicants should have:

  • Minimum of 2 years of management and/or team leadership experience
  • Beat reporting experience or equivalent business editing experience
  • Comfort operating in a rapidly changing media environment

Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
