Triangle Business Journal seeks health care reporter

The Triangle Business Journal in Raleigh-Durham, N.C., is looking for a top-notch reporter who can marry strong traditional journalism skills – source building, sharp news judgment, interviewing prowess, strong analytical and investigative reporting, clear writing, document use – with online and social media know-how. Whatever the platform, this reporter will produce content that is accompanied by perspective and context for a vibrant audience of business owners, executives and professionals in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill region of North Carolina. The Triangle is one of the fastest-growing areas in the country and is a highly competitive media environment.

Job Description
Specifically, this reporter will cover the health care/life sciences and the higher education beats. In health care, the reporter will cover the area’s largest hospitals, publicly traded life sciences companies that are in the forefront of research, innovation and commercialization.  In the higher education beat, the reporter is expected to cover the big business-related issues coming out of prominent local universities such as Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University. The ideal reporter will be producing everything from scoops about important M&As in the life sciences sector to writing about the uber-active technology transfer business at area universities. Writing profiles and in-depth pieces on health care/life sciences executives is encouraged — essentially adding a face and a personality to stories. A good Triangle Business Journal reporter is editor of his or her own beat coverage, and is easily able to assess what merits a story, an in-depth investigation or just a brief.

Duties
A Triangle Business Journal reporter is competitive, collaborative and curious. He or she is expected to contribute both short- and long-form stories to our news products online, in email, on mobile and in print. Specifically, reporters are expected to own every important story on their beat(s); use networking events, social media platforms and other community-building outlets to expand and fortify their source base and audience; work collaboratively with other newsroom staffers to maximize impact and accessibility of stories reported; and meet or exceed goals related to audience engagement. Also, scoops matter — a lot.
