Today Media seeks an editor

Today Media is seeking an Editor to join its Rye, NY, office to head up our ancillary business lifestyle magazine, 914INC. The position, while primarily focused on the six-time/year business pub, additionally has duties as a Senior Lifestyle Editor for flagship Westchester Magazine, a monthly regional lifestyle publication.

Today Media’s regional magazines reach more than 700,000 readers monthly. 914INC., which expanded from a quarterly to a bimonthly in 2021, is dedicated to serving the owners, executives, managers, entrepreneurs, and other professionals that make up our business community. 914INC. continues the traditions of Westchester Magazine with smart writing and stunning photography and layouts. From perceptive profiles of CEOs and kitchen-table entrepreneurs alike, to in-depth reporting on local business issues and business trends, to presentations of the best business tips, 914INC. is designed to inform, entertain, and make office life (and, yes, even life after five) even more enjoyable.

Westchester Magazine covers food & dining, education, real estate, arts & entertainment, beauty & style, personality profiles, and more in the county of near 1 million just north of NYC. Our mission is to produce publications you always look forward to.

For 914INC:

  • Ensure that the 6x/year business lifestyle magazine and its digital spinoff, 914INC e-newsletter, deliver on the editorial mission covering Westchester’s diverse and wide-ranging business community with insightful profiles and in-depth reporting on local issues and trends.
  • Responsible for all editorial duties as necessary including editing, assigning in-house staff and freelancers, writing, story ideas, research, proofing layouts, and attending business events and press conferences.
  • Create editorial lineup for each issue, working with WM editor to flesh out the specifics and develop the best angles and treatments of stories. Responsible for the six print issues being finalized and delivered to press on schedule and completed within allotted budget.
  • Review and approve layouts prior to circulation; collaborate with Creative Director to make enhancements or improvements to the layouts when necessary.
  • Act as ambassador for the brand — providing interviews to media outlets and representing the magazine at the company’s branded events (including hosting/emcee duties), and in the local community (at events, by participating on panels and roundtables sponsored by other organizations).

For Westchester Magazine:

  • Assign/write approx. two features/year.
  • Assign/write several departments (e.g., history, people profile, etc.) and possibly assist other editors by contributing to features throughout the year (e.g., Best Of).
  • Proofing layouts.

Who We Are Looking For:

A knowledge of the Westchester business scene but also the county in general. Business writing experience a must. The candidate should have at least 5 years of experience at a media company writing and editing in primarily B2B categories. Regional lifestyle category writing experience also preferred. S/he is energetic, loves living in Westchester, and has a stream of fresh ideas. S/he is highly collaborative and will get out in the community, attend events, and walk the streets for ideas and establish contacts.
