TODAY Digital seeks a senior lifestyle editor

Want to work with one of America’s most beloved and trusted brands? The TODAY Digital team prides itself on creativity, imagination, and collaboration. We’re currently looking for a proven, innovative editor to join our growing team.

This person will oversee lifestyle content for TODAY through an SEO lens, creating content that seeks to answer our reader’s most burning questions while offering the service they need now. The Senior Lifestyle Editor is responsible for spotting and assigning stories on the latest trends in the lifestyle space across topics including relationships, inspiration, wellness, holidays, home, style, and more. They will also work closely with TODAY Digital’s SEO Manager to translate data and recommended Google keywords into lifestyle stories, editing articles specifically with SEO in mind.

Responsibilities:

  • Stay on top of the latest trends in the lifestyle space to assign fresh and unique stories and features that will drive conversation particularly when it comes to relationships, wellness, inspiration, home, holidays, and style.
  • Collaborate with the TODAY show broadcast team to strategize on lifestyle opportunities that work both on-air and on TODAY.com.
  • Serve as an SEO expert, one who knows how to easily evaluate search volume and navigate Google trends and translate that data into articles that will serve the TODAY audience.
  • Take monthly evergreen lifestyle keyword assignments from TODAY’s SEO manager and assign fresh, voicy stories to TODAY digital’s writers as well as freelance writers.
  • Collaborate with our Senior Health, Parenting, and Food editors to help execute lifestyle and SEO content in their verticals.
  • Manage and work closely with TODAY.com’s lifestyle SEO writer.
  • Study existing content and identify stories in need of updating and refreshing to increase Google ranking.
  • Closely top edit story submissions with SEO top of mind, optimizing copy and headlines with both TODAY’s voice and brand guidelines as well as search optimization in mind.
  • Monitor breaking stories and pop-culture and consider whether there might be an evergreen or SEO-friendly take or angle relevant to our brand.
  • Have a gut instinct for a good story. You’re decisive on angles and assignments, and you know how to both edit and write in a fun, clear, TODAY-friendly voice.
  • Be quick and accurate: Typos drive you crazy. Factual errors keep you up at night. You stay calm when working under pressure, think fast and turn around quickly with no drama.
  • This position has been designated as hybrid, generally contributing from the office a minimum of 3 days per week.

Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of writing and editing experience
  • Extensive experience with SEO, including editing and assigning with SEO in mind; how to evaluate keyword search volume; how to optimize headlines and slugs; how to write optimized copy; how to look at cultural conversations through an SEO lens, and how to spot the SEO angle in any story.
  • Experience analyzing stories that have performed, then replicating those strategies—and pivoting when they don’t
  • A portfolio of journalistic skills: Strong and fast writing and editing; clever and impeccable with strong editorial judgment
  • Experience managing or top editing writers
  • Appreciation for TODAY’s broad range of topics and personalities — from hard news to entertainment to lifestyle, celebrities and newsmakers to ordinary individuals, with a good grasp of topics and stories of high interest to women and young families — is required.
  • This job can be located in Los Angeles or New York City. The shift will be Monday to Friday, with regular coverage for holidays and special events.

  • Active awareness of TODAY personalities and brands
  • Speaks fluent Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Reddit, and Pinterest, and has ideas for how to harvest and promote stories on social platforms
  • Savvy with CMS programs as well as analytic programs like CrowdTangle, Parsley, Google Analytics, Google Console, Domo and Chartbeat to help guide story selection and pivot based on performance
