Times of Northwest Indiana seeks business editor

The Times of Northwest Indiana, a 90,000+ circulation print and online newspaper located 30 miles from downtown Chicago, is looking for a highly motivated business editor to work with a talented, award-winning staff of three reporters and five correspondents to produce stories and projects for the daily business section and A1.

This person will be responsible for daily, weekly and long-range planning, developing coverage, and assigning and editing stories. Teamwork is essential; the business editor works with the business staff as well as metro editors, copy editors, graphic artists, photographers and visual editors to brainstorm, coordinate and produce both daily reports and more creative, in-depth reports for weekend and A1 placement. This person will also serve as part of the newsroom management team. Duties include hosting a quarterly luncheon of a 24-member Board of Economists, composed of entrepreneurs and CEOs from various business and industry sectors who advise the business staff on local business and ecnomic trends.

The successful candidate will be a college graduate. The candidate must have a solid understanding of reporting, researching, interviewing, writing, editing and working with a creative, solid business staff in developing and refining story ideas for fresh approaches to the local business scene. Familiarity with SEC documents, business terminology, bankruptcy procedures, markets and a general understanding of business a plus. Northwest Indiana and Chicago’s southeast suburbs are home to big industry and manufacturing with thousands of employees, as well as myriad medium and small businesses with 50 or fewer employees. The Times strives to cover all businesses and business sectors with both spot- and hard-news stories, and more comprehensive stories that reflect accuracy, precision, discernment and flair.

The candidate should be able to work independently without constant supervision, have excellent time-management and organizational skills, including the ability to accurately gauge project duration, meet deadlines and manage a workload with possible conflicting priorities. Key to this position is an ability to help reporters identify and distill the story behind the story, and direct a variety of types of stories, including issue, trend and enterprise stories.

The Times offers competitive compensation, an excellent benefits package, and a great working environment. Interested candidates may apply online at nwi.com/timesjobs.
