Time seeks a senior tech correspondent

Time is seeking a senior correspondent to cover artificial intelligence at a moment of extraordinary transformation and consequence.

This role, based in San Francisco, will offer a highly experienced and motivated journalist a platform to do the best work of their career. The right candidate will have the time, talent, and editorial support to deliver scoops, definitive profiles of industry leaders, deeply reported enterprise features, and news analysis of how AI is reshaping society, economies, geopolitics, culture, and human creativity. This is a premier opportunity to play a central role in covering one of the world’s biggest stories for a trusted news organization with global reach and influence.

You should be excited about pursuing a broad array of highly ambitious reporting that introduces readers to the people and companies at the vanguard of the industry and reveal how frontier technologies are affecting communities across the country. The role comes with a mandate to produce cover stories, conduct agenda-setting interviews with industry leaders, contribute to TIME’s digital products and platforms — including our AI newsletter, “In the Loop” — and go beyond hype cycles to produce penetrating coverage that holds industry leaders accountable.

The ideal candidate will bring a distinguished body of work that indicates an ability to craft stylish, magazine-style narratives; a deep network of sources; the competitive drive to own a high-stakes beat; and an interest in the ethical, political, and social complexities that arise from emerging technologies. We are looking for someone optimistic about AI’s promise, clear-eyed about its risks, and committed to capturing both with rigor, creativity, and a commitment to the highest journalistic standards.

Responsibilities:

  • Anchor TIME’s coverage of the people, companies, institutions, and debates shaping artificial intelligence
  • Pitch, report and write highly ambitious stories rooted in scoops of fact, access, and idea
  • Work across platforms and at a range of speeds to tell essential stories in the most compelling formats, often under intense time pressure
  • Participate in newsroom-wide special projects and collaborate with colleagues across departments
  • Represent TIME in public-facing roles, including conferences, panels, television, radio, and podcasts
  • Promote and abide by TIME’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion

Qualifications:

  • A track record of exceptional coverage on a technology beat, including a demonstrated ability to break news and develop high-level sources
  • Clips that demonstrate outstanding writing ability
  • Deep knowledge of artificial intelligence and a facility for translating complex technical concepts into clear, compelling journalism
  • Strong interest in the social, political, and economic implications of AI, from governance and public policy to labor markets and mental health
  • An eagerness to collaborate with colleagues to produce world-class journalism that makes a difference
  • A commitment to fact-based, nonpartisan reporting and the highest ethical standards

This position is represented by the NewsGuild of New York.

Location:

This role is based in the San Francisco Bay Area.
