The Washington Post seeks a sports editor

Posted by Mariam Ahmed

The Washington Post is seeking an accomplished, ambitious and innovative news leader to become its next Sports editor.

The successful candidate will oversee The Post’s world-class sports coverage during a period of high ambition, transition and further transformation. The successful candidate will promote continuing excellence in holding to account the powerful decision-makers behind one of the world’s most profitable and influential industries, while also fostering an audience-first approach to serving obsessive fan bases, across the United States, internationally and locally.

The Sports editor’s portfolio demands dexterity as well as creativity. The department’s breaking-news and beat reporting teams cover athlete, team and industry developments early and often even as its accountability reporters undertake high-stakes, deeper investigations. Its columnists mix passion and expertise as they help fans make sense of the ups and downs of any given season.

A sensibility that makes room for playfulness and fun will serve this editor well, as will a clear viewpoint on how best to balance the needs of national and international audiences with those of local audiences.

Strong leadership skills and experience with collaboration, including with visual teams, are a must to successfully lead a highly talented and diverse staff that frequently works with other parts of The Post newsroom.

Please consider applying if you meet most of the criteria below.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 10 years of professional journalism experience, with at least five years as a manager.
  • A record of success in sports journalism, including having edited with distinction for a national or international news organization.
  • Demonstrated experience guiding reporters and editors through a period of transition and change.
  • Substantial experience in serving a digital audience, as well as a commitment to telling stories optimized for a variety of platforms, whether with text, visuals, graphics, sound or all the above.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading large teams, as well as an approach to management that balances kindness and empathy with high expectations and impeccable journalistic standards.
  • Experience in encouraging and facilitating collaboration, both within the Sports department and with other departments across the newsroom.
  • Experience managing a budget and planning for big events such as the Olympics.

This position is based in our Washington newsroom.

Interested applicants should submit a résumé and a cover letter outlining their vision for the role to our jobs portal. All application materials can be uploaded to the same field. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled, but those received by 05/28/2023 will be prioritized. The cover letter should be addressed to Executive Editor Sally Buzbee, Senior Managing Editor Cameron Barr and Interim Managing Editor Barbara Vobejda.
