The Washington Post is seeking an innovative, insightful and dynamic journalist to take on a new leadership position as audience strategy editor for our Metro, Education, Social Issues and Transportation coverage. Among the goals of this position is to accelerate experimental thinking about these essential subject areas.

The successful candidate will help chart the trajectory of our coverage of these subjects by developing strategies that place the needs of our audience at the center of our journalism. Tapping all audience disciplines — including tactics for reaching new readers, building loyalty and capitalizing on social and search, newsletters and alerts — this person will help guide decisions about what gets covered and how, as well as how to think about opportunities for both staff and audience growth.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced newsroom leader who has a demonstrated ability to produce journalism that meets the needs of various news audiences. This candidate should have a clear point of view on story form, use of voice and effective visual journalism and have the skill to discern and elevate strong and appealing story targets from the flood of daily news.

There is an essential training aspect to this job, as well. The audience strategy editor will train editors and reporters on engaging audiences, including but not limited to optimization, link strategy and headline writing. The editor also will collaborate with the audience and newsletter teams in helping to reshape the department’s afternoon newsletter.

Strong candidates will have eight or more years of newsroom experience, including in the use of audience analytics. Management experience is preferred, as is a feel for local news and the subjects covered by the Metro team.

This position will report directly to the Metro editor and is based in our Washington newsroom.

Candidates should upload a résumé and a cover letter that articulates how you would approach the role to our jobs portal. All application materials can be uploaded to the same field. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled, but those received by 4/2/2023 will be prioritized. Your cover letter should be addressed to Metro Editor Mike Semel, Deputy Metro Editor Maria Glod, Head of Audience Strategy and Growth Erika Allen and Deputy Managing Editor Liz Seymour.
