The Wall Street Journal seeks a video journalist, development

The Wall Street Journal is looking for a video journalist to focus on development for its YouTube team. We’re looking for someone who understands the YouTube landscape and can help develop and pilot future series and new formats specifically for the platform

Please note, this is not an entry-level position and it is not a position producing documentaries. This role functions as the idea generator for a team of video journalists.

Responsibilities:

  • You will be expected to attend production meetings with a wide range of ideas on a variety of topics
  • You will also be responsible for creating topical, news-focused videos and jumpstarting short-form video formats and franchises
  • Videos will range in length from three to eight minutes and will span a variety of coverage areas
  • The position is based in our New York City office and reports to the Supervising Development Producer
  • Conceive and drive the development and execution of short-form video
  • Pitch, develop, research, report and write for a variety of formats, structures and stories to be produced for the WSJ YouTube channel
  • Shoot and edit videos in-studio and in the field with proficient lighting skills and in partnership with other video journalists and producers
  • Partner with reporters and editors across the WSJ newsroom to identify and produce timely video news pieces that standout and engage our audience
  • Manage multiple projects in various stages of production, on tight deadlines
  • Ensure that all WSJ journalistic and legal standards are followed at all times
  • Work late hours and weekends both as part of a regular weekend rotation and as news developments may warrant
  • Complete additional duties as assigned, including breaking news assignments

Qualifications:

  • Top candidates for this position will have a professional background in video journalism, demonstrate exceptional story development and scriptwriting skills
  • Prior experience developing new creative video approaches will be key
  • Excellent shooting and video editing skills are a must
  • At least five years of experience producing and developing digital videos in a daily news environment at a national or global media company
  • Demonstrated experience producing quality video content efficiently under tight deadlines
  • A proven capacity to manage every aspect of video production from start to finish, both independently and working with producers and editors
  • Deep understanding and interest in The Journal’s core coverage areas
  • Strong editorial judgment and broad knowledge of current events
  • Experience writing and presenting pitches, as well as contributing to creative brainstorming sessions to generate new ideas
  • Experience shooting video with multiple camera systems and setups, both in-studio and in the field
  • Professional-level understanding of Adobe Creative Suite, with a high level of expertise in Premiere and basic knowledge of After Effects, Photoshop and Illustrator
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with exceptional organizational and time management skills
  • The Journal’s reporters, editors, developers, and audio and visual journalists create important and impactful stories, firmly rooted in fact and adhering to the highest ethical standards

NYC Pay Range: $40,000 – $160,000
