The Villages Daily Sun seeks a senior copy editor/wire editor, Florida

The Villages Daily Sun, Florida’s largest daily printed newspaper in the nation’s fastest growing metropolitan area (and the only newspaper in America’s largest 25 that is still growing), is seeking a seasoned gatekeeper to shepherd our award-winning news report.

Editors on our copy desk rotate between curating a robust world & nation section, managing syndicated commentary and elevating the storytelling of hyper-local reporters. So a deep knowledge of current events is as essential as ensuring proper use of grammar, punctuation, clarity and accuracy.

Senior staffers are members of the newsroom’s leadership team, charged with making smart content decisions under deadline pressure and mentoring less-experienced staffers. We have a strong track record of quality control, so you must be comfortable insisting on a rigorous editing process.

InDesign proficiency is a plus, as you’ll be most effective if you can manage some basic page design. However, we can teach you the technical aspects of the job —the most important element is a passion for an excellent reader experience.

Ours is a newsroom that values experimental thinking and the power of unconventional storytelling. We offer a generous newshole (about 80 pages daily), impeccable print quality, modern tech resources and managerial support that enable good journalists to become truly great.

Our business strategy is community-first, not digital-first, which means our editors are allowed to focus on quality editing without the distraction of a digital workflow. Our local family ownership has just built the first printing plant in America in the last decade, which means we still enjoy late publication deadlines for news events across all time zones. We’re also an onsite newsroom that believes in the power of eyeball-to-eyeball collaboration vs. the creative vacuum of a remote workflow.

The Villages is a 90-mile drive to the beach, Orlando’s theme parks and the historic neighborhoods of Gainesville and St. Augustine. We offer competitive pay, excellent benefits and access to a highly regarded charter school system in one of the state’s most idyllic settings.

Send a letter of introduction and resume to the attention of Executive Associate Editor Nick Feely at nick.feely@thevillagesmedia.com.
