The Verge is a new kind of online publication with an emphasis on living in the future. We’re looking for a New York-based reporter who’s hungry to write tech news with accuracy, speed, and strong angles. This person will join a team of fellow writers who excel in a fast-paced environment, have a broad knowledge of current events, and can write quickly, accurately, and in a voice that fits The Verge.
We want someone looking to write in a fast-paced journalism setting who has an interest in a range of subjects — primarily technology, but able to converse about science, pop culture, design, and more. Bonus points if you’re a major nerd about one (or more) of those areas, and can contribute additional expertise and enthusiastic ideas to those realms. You’ll be responsible for contributing multiple news stories a day, and offering readers a mix of breaking news, original reporting, and photo essays, all written with the right tone (a sense of humor, where appropriate, is vital). Extra bonus points if you’ve got photography skills. This is an intense, demanding position, but one that’ll be hugely rewarding for the right person — someone who lives and breathes writing news, and is excited at the idea of reaching an audience of more than 20 million people each month. Are you that person? We want to hear from you.
Responsibilities
- Write and publish several pieces on a daily basis, ranging from quick 400-word items to photo galleries to tracking the latest on a breaking news event
- Come up with fresh, sharp angles on the day’s news and offer smart opinions that complement the straight news and offer new insights for readers
- Report news out as necessary, on tight deadlines, which includes making calls, asking tough questions, and pursuing a story aggressively
- Participate in local or global event coverage, as required
Requirements
- Commute daily to our New York office
- A generalist news sensibility, with a range of interests that span technology, science, culture, art, design, and politics (nerdy appreciation for one or more of these topics is great)
- Knowledge and familiarity with online publishing tools and HTML
- An ability to write quickly and accurately in a high-pressure environment
