The Verge is looking for a junior transportation reporter to cover the products and technologies that move us — cars, bicycles, trains, watercraft, aircraft, hyperloops, and everything in between.

You should excel in a fast-paced environment, have a broad knowledge of current events in the transportation industry, and be able to write quickly, accurately, and in a voice that fits The Verge. You’ll be responsible for breaking news and leading online conversations about companies big and small, contributing multiple stories a day, all written with the right tone. A sense of humor, where appropriate, is vital.

The ideal candidate should have at least 1-2 years of online writing and editing experience, with a sharp news sense and a deep love of transportation in all of its forms. Photography skills are a must. This is an intense, demanding position, but one that’ll be hugely rewarding for the right person — someone who lives and breathes writing news, and is excited at the idea of reaching an audience of 30 million people each month. Are you that person? We want to hear from you.

TL;DR if you’re a smart, fast, and opinionated writer with a desire to build things off the beaten path in one of the fastest growing companies in media, this is the position for you.

Requirements

  • An ability to write quickly and accurately in a high-pressure environment
  • A willingness to work independently and as part of a large group of talented, weird writers
  • Break news and lead conversations about the transportation industry and the people, companies, and products within it
  • Write and publish multiple pieces on busy days, ranging from quick 200-word items to photo galleries to tracking the latest on a breaking news event
  • You can take photos that don’t suck
  • A varied set of interests that goes far beyond your beat

Responsibilities

  • Be deeply connected to the global transportation news scene, ready to beat the competition to the hottest and most interesting stories all day, every day
  • Come up with fresh, sharp angles on the day’s news and offer smart opinions that complement the straight news and offer new insights for readers
  • Report news out as necessary, on tight deadlines, which includes making calls, asking tough questions, and pursuing a story aggressively
  • Appearing on camera as a trusted personality
  • Knowledge and familiarity with online publishing tools and HTML
  • Participate in local or global event coverage as required
  • Occasional travel as required
