The Times-Standard seeks a sports reporter

The Times-Standard is looking for a staff reporter whose duties will be split between covering local sports and local news. News stories will include coverage of local city council meetings; sports coverage includes Cal Poly Humboldt, College of the Redwoods, Humboldt Crabs and local high school sports primarily. The ideal candidate will have previous professional newspaper or journalism experience and a strong working knowledge of AP style.

What you will do:

  • Primary responsibility is reporting at least two byline stories per day on sports and news topics
  • Working cooperatively with our small team or journalists

What you will bring:

  • Journalism experience, AP style knowledge and the ability to quickly compile accurate reporting on a variety of topics. Spelling and grammar skills required
  • The candidate should have experience working with various technologies for the position including PC laptops, digital cameras and recording equipment
  • Good people skills are necessary for conducting interviews with sources
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; experience in a professional journalism newsroom preferred

Travel/Work Environment:

  • Some required as we cover a 4,000-square-mile area
  • Amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, most work is done remotely although there is access to our office and the nearly 170 years of our newspaper archive
  • Driving to cover stories is occasionally required

The hourly wage is $16.15. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc.
